Praça de Espanha - until 1998 Palhavã  - is a subway station of the Linha Azul of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . The train station is located to the west under Praça de Espanha in the municipality of Campolide . The neighboring stations of the train station are São Sebastião and Jardim Zoológico . The station went into operation on December 29, 1959 as one of the eleven stations of the Lisbon origin network.

history

On December 29, 1959, the Lisbon city administration, together with the operating company Metropolitano de Lisboa, opened the Portuguese capital's first small route network with the two branches to Sete Rios and Entre Campos and the common terminus Restauradores . Palhavã Station was one of the eleven stations that opened . Francisco Keil do Amaral designed two sober, 40 meter long and 4.2 meter wide side platforms. As with most other train stations, the artistic design was carried out by Maria Keil, who comes from the Algarve . She decided on the typical azulejos in the color yellow and chose different, darker, corresponding colors, so that a three-dimensionality was created in some cases. Wedge used small brick slips for the platform walls . Basically, the station is very similar to the neighboring stations, for example São Sebastião and Parque (no longer visible today).

Due to the growing passenger flows from 1966, the operating company decided from 1972 to extend all platforms, the length of which varied between 40 and 70 meters, depending on the importance and opening date, to 105 meters so that six-car trains can stop there. The platforms of Palhavã station were extended in 1978 by 65 meters to the south. In 1980, the operating company had the station widened to the west, so that a new entrance to Avenida Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro was created under the direction of the architect Carlos Sanchez Jorge . As before, Maria Keil designed the new entrance. The addition to the platform is very clearly visible, as a narrow row of columns flank the two side platforms.

The station has not changed much since then. Only in 1998 did the operating company Metropolitano de Lisboa rename the station in a major renaming campaign, and since then it has had the title of the above-ground square. In the future it is planned to equip it with elevators. However, since the expansion of the existing lines is currently the main focus of the Lisbon Metro, the subsequent installation is currently not foreseeable in the short to medium term.
