Entre Campos is a metro station on the Linha Amarela of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . The station is located below the Avenida da República between the Campo Grande square and the railway station of the same name in the municipality of Avenidas Novas . The neighboring stations of the train station are Campo Pequeno and Cidade Universitária . The station went into operation on December 29, 1959 as one of the eleven stations of the original Lisbon network.

history

The Lisbon city administration officially opened the Entrecampos station on December 29, 1959. Entrecampos was the terminus of the Ypsilon-shaped between Restauradores , Sete Rios and Entre Campos . The station, which like all Lisbon underground stations has two side platforms, was given the usual architectural design like all other subway stations. The station itself was designed by the Portuguese architect Francisco Keil do Amaral , while Maria Keil was responsible for the architectural design . For the usual azulejo patterns, Keil chose different shades of red and yellow, with individual light green tones.

Until 1988, the underground station remained the end of the network, an expansion failed due to the country's financial situation. Only with the extension of the line to the underground station Cidade Universitária neighboring "university town" did the station lose this function.

In 1993 the station was the first in the network to be completely renovated. The operating company of the metro invited the artists Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos and José Santa Bárbara to redesign the station. Cid dos Santos, painter and sculptor, was responsible for the platforms, Santa Bárbara for the pedestrian tunnel to the railway station.

Cid dos Santos was inspired by the nearby national library. For the southern mezzanine floor of the train station, he made a mural of a “stone library”, which shows the development of Portuguese literature from the Middle Ages to modern times. In addition to this exhibit, Cid dos Santos made various smaller decorative elements for the platforms, which are supposed to represent his two favorite literary works: on the western platform Os Lusíadas by Luís Vaz de Camões , on the eastern Ode Marítima by Álvaro de Campos (Fernando Pessoa) . Another work honors the sculptor Robert Motherwell , whose admirer is Cid dos Santos. The following quotation from Motherwell is engraved on the work in Portuguese: Importa saber que nicht se pode falar numa arte nacional; ser simplesmente um artista americano ou francês not significa coisa alguma. Não ser capaz de sair do seu primeiro meio artístico, é meio caminho para nunca atingir o humano. (German: "It is important to make it clear that there is no national art, it does not matter whether someone is an American or a French artist. Not getting out of your artistic environment means never being able to become human.") José Santa Bárbara created in the transition tunnel to the railway station a kind of stone fountain, which is supposed to be an alegory of water, light and sound to remind of the Arab heritage in Portugal.

The station has elevators to the road surface and to the railway station and is therefore considered barrier-free.
