CP Urbanos de Lisboa
The CP Urbanos de Lisboa , rarely also CP Lisboa , in German "Railways of Portugal suburban trains from Lisbon", formerly Unidade de Suburbanos de Grande Lisboa (USGL), is a business unit of the Portuguese state railway Comboios de Portugal . It operates almost the entire Lisbon suburban railway network, and another line runs under the direction of the private Fertagus .
history
CP Urbanos de Lisboa , founded in 1997, operates four so-called "line families" similar to S-Bahn trains, as different courses run on each line, which for example do not serve the entire route and sometimes also line branches. All trains of the CP Urbanos de Lisboa belong to the Urbano train type .
Due to the dramatic budget crisis in Portugal since 2008, the Portuguese government planned to tender the individual line families from the end of 2011 and thus possibly have them operated by foreign rail companies. Due to the high number of passengers and the high level of cost recovery at CP Lisboa, strong competition for the tenders was expected. A call for tenders has not yet been published and is no longer being pursued.

CP Urbanos de Lisboa is the most successful business unit of CP. In 2007 it carried 97 million passengers, in 2008 96 million; CP Urbanos de Lisboa thus carried 70 percent of all passengers on the Portuguese State Railways, which in 2008 had a total of 135.5 million passengers. In 2008 the subsidiary had a workforce of 868.
In 2007 the business unit of the state railway achieved a profit of 75 million euros, in 2008 78.5 million euros. This made CP Urbanos de Lisboa the most successful line of business after the long-distance transport division of Comboios de Portugal . The subsidies from the Portuguese state for suburban traffic amounted to 28.5 million euros in 2007 and will increase to 32.3 million euros by 2010.
Apart from the Linha de Azambuja , more than 90 percent of all trains of the CP Urbanos de Lisboa run on time. On the Linha de Sintra in 2008, 93.4% of all trains were on time (2007: 89%), on the Linha de Cascais 98% (2007: 97%), on the Linha de Azambuja 87.2% (2007: 91%) and on the Linha de Sado 93.4% (2007: 98%).
Overall, the trains of CP Urbanos de Lisboa are mainly used by regular customers, 81.1 percent of all passengers use the trains particularly often, although about the same number (79.3 percent) own a car.
vehicles
CP Urbanos de Lisboa has various types of vehicles tailored to suburban rail traffic. Until November 2013 there were relatively strict vehicle allocations for the individual line families. Due to track damage on the Linha de Sintra and the resulting more frequent maintenance intervals for the 2300/2400 series , a new vehicle concept has been in place since then.
On behalf of the Comboios de Portugal , a consortium of GEC Alsthom and CAF produced 30 four-part double-decker trains of the 3500 series between 1998 and 2001 . Today 18 of the 30 vehicles are used by the private transport company Fertagus . Technically very much based on the Spanish model of the 450 series , the railcars have a top speed of 140 km / h and 88 seats and 85 standing places in the motor vehicle or 150 seats and 120 standing places in the sidecar. The trains run in fixed sets of four cars. Until 2013, the trains were permanently in use on the Castanheira do Ribatejo – Alcântara-Terra line, and from 2011 to 2013 also on the Azambuja – Santa Apolónia line. Since November 2013, these have been used on the Sintra line family between Rossio and Sintra.
Originally for the Linha de Sintra, Siemens developed the 2300 series (and later the 2400) and produced it at Sorefame between 1991 and 1994; the 2400 series followed in 1997. The trains have a top speed of 120 km / h and 316 seats and 560 standing places. CP Urbanos de Lisboa used them on the Rossio – Sintra route until November 2013. Since then, these have been in use on the Azambuja Line between Azambuja and Alcântara-Terra. As before 2013, this also operates on the (Sintra–) Meleças – Oriente (–Alverca) routes and, since the electrification of the Linha do Alentejo in 2008, also on the Linha do Sado (Barreiro – Praias do Sado).
Only vehicles from the specially equipped 3150/3250 series can be used on the Linha de Cascais between Cais do Sodré and Cascais , as the almost self-sufficient route is operated with 1500 volts direct current instead of the usual 25 kilovolts / 50 hertz alternating voltage . Nevertheless, there is now a currentless track connection at Alcântara-Mar station , via which the trains can reach the depots at Sete Rios.
Due to the shortage of wagons, the 2240 series vehicles intended for regional traffic will also be used on the route between Castanheira do Ribajeto and Santa Apolónia in November 2013 .
