Alcântara-Mar train station on the Linha de Cascais in Lisbon

The Lisbon Alcântara-Mar is a train station on the Linha de Cascais in the Freguesia Alcântara of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . Trains of the Linha de Cascais of the state railway subsidiary CP Urbanos de Lisboa stop at the station . Passengers who want to change to Alcântara-Terra of Linha de Cintura , one kilometer away , were able to use a long pedestrian bridge until autumn 2008, which has since been demolished. A complete redesign of the Alcântara railway junction is currently being planned by the Lisbon city administration, REFER and the Portuguese government by 2013.

history

The Alcântara-Mar station went into operation on December 6, 1890 as part of the Pedrouços - Estoril line. However, the station only briefly retained its function as the terminus of the Linha de Cascais trains, as traffic was relocated to Alcântara-Terra station, one kilometer away, on August 10, 1891. All trains of the Linha de Cascais initially ended here, as a train station closer to the center was not available at the time - without any major detours. The line between the two train stations in Cascais and Cais do Sodré has only been in continuous operation since September 4, 1895 .

With the takeover of the line by the private company Sociedade de Estoril in 1918, the first electrification followed in 1924 and thus the first of a Portuguese railway line. The connection between Alcântara-Mar and Alcântara-Terra has only been used by freight trains and for operational trips since 1995.

While operations at the Alcântara-Terra train station were soon discontinued, the train station on the Tejo did not change significantly. To reopen the neighboring train station to the north in 1992, the Caminhos-de-ferro Portugueses built a long, red pedestrian bridge between the two train stations. The bridge was hardly used due to the limited connections, so that the REFER authority, which now operates the infrastructure, had the bridge demolished in autumn 2008.

Due to the very unsatisfactory transfer situation between the Linha de Cintura at the Alcântara-Terra train station and the Linha de Cascais Alcântara-Mar, the city administration of Lisbon, REFER and the Portuguese government are planning a completely new construction of the two train stations under the name Nova Alcântara (New Alcântara) or amalgamation and expansion of the rail connections. In the future, the trains of the Linha de Cascais, the Linha de Cintura and, in the future, the Lisbon Metro (extension of the Linha Amarela from Rato ) will stop in an underground station near the Tagus. In addition, direct trains between the Linha de Cintura and the Linha de Cascais should be possible, and the adjacent freight terminal will be expanded and the rail connection for this expanded as well. The total volume of the project is 407 million euros and should be completed by 2013.
