Lisbon Alcântara-Terra train station

Alcântara-Terra is a train station on the Linha de Cintura in the Freguesia Alcântara of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It represents the end point of the railway belt around Lisbon, at the same time the trains of the suburban line Linha da Azambuja of the Portuguese state railway subsidiary CP Urbanos de Lisboa end there . Passengers who want to change trains to the Lisbon Alcântara-Mar station on the Linha de Cascais , one kilometer away , were able to use a long footbridge until autumn 2008, which has since been demolished. The redesign of the Alcântara railway junction is currently not being pursued any further.

history

The station was opened on April 2, 1877 by the Royal Portuguese Railway as part of the Linha de Sintra to Sintra and Cacém. The trains from the noble suburb ended up far from the center of Lisbon, so that the Lisbon tram had to be used first. With the opening of the Linha de Cintura to Santa Apolónia , the train station lost its importance. Santa Apolónia was much closer to the center of the city around the Rossio and the Praça do Comércio than Alcântara.

In 1891 the Rossio Tunnel was opened so that trains from Sintra could now stop right at the Rossio. At the same time, the state railway also opened several small operating lines , including a non-electrified track between the Alcântara-Terra station and the Linha de Cascais at Alcântara-Mar station, which opened in 1889/90 . Until the completion of the Cais do Sodré terminus in 1895, trains from Cascais and Estoril therefore ended in Alcântara. The narrow operating line is still the only connection between the Cascais line and the rest of the network.

With the opening of the Rossio and Santa Apolónia train stations, Alcântara-Terra lost a lot of its importance, passenger traffic was immediately discontinued and only sparse freight traffic remained. While most of the Lisbon suburban network was electrified by the Caminhos-de-ferro Portugueses in 1957 , this did not happen for the Campolide – Alcântara-Terra section until April 2, 1987. The station has been reopened since 1992 and is now the end of a Linha train run da Azambuja from Castanheira do Ribatejo .

Due to the very unsatisfactory transfer situation between the Linha de Cintura at the Alcântara-Terra train station and Alcântara-Mar train station, the Lisbon City Council, REFER and the Portuguese government planned a completely new construction of the two train stations or a merger as well under the name Nova Alcântara (New Alcântara) an expansion of the rail connections. The trains of the Linha de Cascais, the Linha de Cintura as well as the planned subway (extension of the Linha Amarela from Rato ) should stop in an underground station near the Tagus. In addition, direct trains between the Linha de Cintura and the Linha de Cascais should be possible. The freight terminal in the port of Alcântara was also to be expanded and the rail connection for it expanded. The total volume of the project was given as 407 million euros. Completion was planned for 2013.
