Sintra train station is the terminus of the Linha de Sintra

The Linha de Sintra is a Portuguese suburban railway line between the Lisbon Rossio train station in the city center and the suburb of Sintra .

The Linha de Sintra is the busiest suburban line in Lisbon, it connects the large suburbs such as Amadora, Cacém and Sintra with the center of the Portuguese capital. It is a double-track line that has been expanded to four tracks from the starting station Rossio to Monte Abraão station due to the high volume of traffic.

history

The railway line opened on April 2, 1887, but initially the line ended in Alcântara due to the lack of a train station in the city center. With the opening of the Rossio Tunnel in 1890, the Royal Portuguese Railways extended the line to Rossio . On October 28, 1956 , the Linha de Sintra was electrified.

The tunnel through which the route runs just behind the Rossio was restored between 2006 and 2008 along with some dilapidated sections of the route.

business

Today, suburban trains run on the route under the name Linha de Sintra every ten minutes to Rossio or Alverca, which are operated by the subsidiary CP Urbanos de Lisboa of the state railway company Comboios de Portugal . In addition to the suburban trains, there are also regional trains via the Linha de Sintra and Linha do Oeste to Óbidos and Caldas da Rainha , a few pairs of trains continue to Coimbra-B .
