The Lisbon Campolide train station is a train station at the intersection of the Linha de Sintra , Linha de Cintura and Linha do Sul in Lisbon and is located in the municipality of the same name . The station is the operational hub of the Lisbon suburban railways, and the largest workshop of CP Urbanos de Lisboa is also located in the vicinity of the station.

Only suburban trains of the CP Urbanos de Lisboa ( Sintra - Rossio , Azambuja - Alcântara-Terra ) and Fertagus ( Setúbal - Roma-Areeiro ) stop at the station . The station is divided into two parts: the station Campolide keep the trains of the Linha de Sintra, the station Campolide-A keep the Fertagus trains and the trains of the Linha de Azambuja. The latter is also the zero point of the Linha do Sul kilometers .

history

The Campolide train station went into operation in 1887 as part of the opening of the Linha de Sintra , which connected the noble suburb of Sintra , seat of the royal summer residence, with the Portuguese capital Lisbon. First, however, the trains ended in Alcântara , so that they had to continue using other means of transport.

As early as 1888, the station developed into the crossing point of the Lisbon railway lines, where the new Linha de Cintura , starting at Campolide station, went into operation to Santa Apolónia station . The opening of the Rossio tunnel to the new Lisbon main train station, Rossio, followed in 1891 . Through these openings, the station was expanded and received two platforms for the Linha de Sintra and two for the Linha de Cintura.

As a crossing station, the area around Campolide station was particularly suitable for the Portuguese railways' workshops. These are still to this day east of the station between him and Sete Rios . When the workshops were built, many workers moved to Campolide , who then made up the majority of the population. Campolide was also the site of numerous strikes during the First Portuguese Republic . In January 1911, the railroad workers struck for the eight-hour day; other major strikes followed between 1914 and 1917.

In 1957, steam and diesel operation in the Lisbon area largely ended, electrifying the Linha de Sintra and the Campolide-Braço de Prata section of the Linha de Cintura. The single-track section Campolide-Alcântara-Terra was initially only used for freight traffic and was only electrified in 1987. Passenger trains have been running here again since 1992.

Since 1999 the Linha do Sul has been running over the Ponte 25 de Abril and thus also over Campolide. In the course of this expansion, the station was completely renovated in 2000 and made barrier-free.
