The Lisbon Braço de Prata station is a railway junction in the northeast of the Portuguese capital Lisbon in the Freguesia Marvila , on the Linha do Norte between the Santa Apolónia central station and the Gare do Oriente , the city's main long-distance station. It is located at the confluence of the Linha de Cintura with the main route to Porto.
history
opening
In 1888 the Linha de Cintura was led from Campolide to Braço de Prata. This connected the Linha de Sintra with the Linha do Norte. At the same time, the construction of the station followed, which in 1902 was equipped with an electrical signal system called Barbosa .
Electrification of the track systems
In 1957, large parts of the Lisbon railway network were electrified, including the Cintura and the Norte . However, the tender for electrification between Braço de Prate and Rossio train station was started as early as 1926. At that time, it was expected that it would take 4 to 5 years to build this from movements to free the Rossio Tunnel from steam locomotives.
Transfer function
Until the opening of the Gare do Oriente in 1998, the station was the first stop for travelers from the north and it increasingly took over the function of transferring trains from the north to the suburban trains of Lisbon from the Rossio station, even if express trains never stopped here. With the opening of Oriente, it took over the function of the junction, also because it is served by all long-distance trains that touch Lisbon.
Today's meaning
Above all, the train station is still of importance for the surrounding area, with the Vale Formoso de Cima there is an urban development area in which offices and industrial companies are located. Industrial companies can also be found at the Tagus docks of Poço de Bispo and Matinha.
future
From 2013, a junction will be made south of Braço de Prata to the Terceira Travessia do Tejo (TTT), a suspension bridge between Lisbon and Barreiro that will have a road and a railroad track. The trains from the direction of Porto / Northern Portugal would pass the station.
investment
The station has four tracks and has two side platforms and one central platform. The two tracks facing the Tejo belong to the Linha do Norte, the other two tracks to the west to the Linha de Cintura. The merging of the two lines is only created after the station, there is no switch connection between the two lines south of the station.
