The Lisbon Belém station (in signage and timetables only as Belém called) is a railway station in Lisbon Freguesia Belém . The station at the Linha de Cascais is from an operational point of view a stopping point, as there are no turnouts in the station area.

history

The Belém stop was opened on December 6, 1890, when the Pedrouços – Alcântara-Mar section was opened to traffic. Trains to Cascais were already running when operations began; this line had already been put into operation a year earlier. In 1895 the continuation to the Estação Cais do Sodré in the city center of Lisbon followed. In 1932 the temporary buildings were erected with a new reception building with a shelter for travelers.

traffic

Since the Linha de Cascais was integrated into the USGL system (today CP Urbanos de Lisboa ) in 1997 , the station has been served exclusively by local trains. Today, trains from the Linha de Cascais family between Cais do Sodré and Oeiras stop every quarter of an hour ; the trains on the Cais do Sodré – EstorilCascais route pass the station without stopping. There is no freight traffic.

Plant and reception building

The station consists of two through tracks on two side platforms, there are no sidings, just as little as switches, so that Belém is an operational stop (apadeiro). The platform facing the center of Belém includes a reception building that houses smaller facilities such as a bar, telephone booths and ticket machines, while the other platform has a shelter. The station is located between Avenida de India and Avenida de Brasilia, the two western arteries of Lisbon. The development takes place via an overpass, which also ensures the connection between Belém and the banks of the Tejo.

meaning

In addition to the tram and bus, the stop is the main link in Belém. In contrast to the first two modes of transport, it is particularly important for commuters and those transferring from Porto Brandão, the tourist attractions around the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos , the Torre de Belém and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos are hundreds of meters west of the station.

Estaço Fluvial de Belém

Immediately to the south of the station is the Estaço Fluvial de Belém (also Gare Fluvial de Belém ), at whose three berths ships to Porto Brandão of Transtejo & Soflusa operate .
