It was built in 1960 on the 500th anniversary of the death of Heinrich the Navigator by the Salazar regime . The monument has a height of 56 meters. Inside there is an auditorium for 101 people with a stage, and an exhibition hall on the second floor. From the second floor there is a staircase that leads to the lookout point.

The monument is intended to commemorate the Age of Discovery and shows 33 important personalities of the late Middle Ages in Portugal, who, however, did not all live at the same time:

Architecture and mosaic

There is a compass rose made of mosaic stones on the floor in front of the entrance. The compass rose has a diameter of 50 meters and was a gift from the Republic of South Africa . A world map in the center of the mosaic shows the routes of Portuguese explorers in the 15th and 16th centuries.

A paid elevator inside the monument takes you to the top, from where you have a view of the Tagus, the Ponte 25 de Abril , the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and the Torre de Belém . There are inscriptions on the northern facade. Left: "AO INFANTE D. HENRIQVE E AOS PORTVGVESES QVE DESCOBRIRAM OS CAMINHOS DO MAR" ( In honor of Prince Heinrich and the Portuguese who discovered the sea routes ); Right: "NO V CENTENÁRIO DO INFANTE D. HENRIQVE 1460 - 1960" ( In the 5th century Prince Heinrichs 1460-1960 ).
