Symbol of possession: replica of a padrão in Sagres

A padrão ( Portuguese for pattern , plural padrões ) is a stone pillar with the coat of arms of Portugal and a cross on top. On the pillars was the year of installation, the name of the navigator and the ruling king in Latin and Portuguese.

The Portuguese captains the discovery time in that line from 1482 to reach coasts at prominent locations such as capes or estuaries to Portugal's territorial claims to document about the discovered fields. The first discoverer to set these pillars was Diogo Cão , who discovered the mouth of the Congo in 1482 . Original columns were discovered in Namibia , South Africa and Indonesia .
