Gottfried North

Gottfried North (born January 18, 1920 in Gießen ; † October 16, 2003 ) was a German postal worker, philatelist and postal historian. From 1962 to 1985 he was director of the Bundespostmuseum in Frankfurt am Main and has published numerous publications on postal history and philately.

After graduating from high school in Gießen in 1938, he was drafted into labor service and then into military service. During World War II he suffered nerve paralysis on his left leg. After returning home from Soviet captivity in July 1947, he joined the postal service of the German Federal Post Office . He became a civil servant and headed the city post office in Giessen. On November 19, 1962, he became head of the Bundespostmuseum in Frankfurt am Main. In 1971 he became managing director of the Society for German Postal History , and in 1980 he was appointed postal director. North represented the Deutsche Bundespost in the German Museum Association, in the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and in the International Association of Transport and Communication Museums (IATM), of which he was also vice-president. In 1982 he received thatCross of Merit on ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1985 he retired. Even after retiring from his job, he remained a member of the board of trustees of the Museum Foundation Post and Telecommunications, as well as editor-in-chief of the series Archive for German Postal History and Managing Director of the German Society for Postal and Telecommunication History (DGPT) . He has published widely on postal history and philatelic topics. In addition to his own books, he published around 500 articles in the archive publication. He received numerous honorary awards, including honorary membership of the DGPT and the medal of honor of the BDPh .
