AH de Oliveira Marques

António Henrique Rodrigo de Oliveira Marques (born August 23, 1933 in São Pedro do Estoril , Cascais district , † January 23, 2007 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese historian, university professor and author.

Life

After studying the philosophy of history at the University of Lisbon (graduating in 1956), he went to the University of Würzburg , to Hermann Kellenbenz . In 1957 he became a lecturer at the University of Lisbon, where he received his doctorate in 1960 with a thesis on the relationship between the Hanseatic League and the Kingdom of Portugal in the Middle Ages. After participating in the student strikes in 1962, which were directed against the educational policy of the repressive Estado Novo regime under Salazar , Marques was dismissed from the university.

He went to the United States , where he worked at various universities, such as Columbia University , University of Alabama , Auburn University , Florida State University , University of Minnesota , and the private University of Chicago . In 1970 Marques returned to Portugal. In 1973 he became a Freemason ; he later held high offices there and published a number of books on their history.

After the Carnation Revolution , which overthrew the dictatorship in Portugal on April 25, 1974, he returned to the Portuguese university. From October 1974 to April 1976 he was also director of the National Library in Lisbon, the Biblioteca Nacional founded in 1796 . Through a large number of publications, in particular on the history of Portugal and the history of Freemasonry, he then gained some international recognition. But he also published on topics as varied as the history of the Portuguese postage stamps and the insurance industry in Portugal.

Marques died in Lisbon in 2007.

Marques became known to a wider public, in particular as an author of historical works. His standard work História de Portugal ( History of Portugal ) has been translated into nine languages. His comprehensive Breve História de Portugal , published in Lisbon in 1995, was published in Germany under the title History of Portugal and the Portuguese Empire , and in 2001 by Alfred Kröner Verlag .

After his death on January 23, 2007, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Portugal organized an exhibition in the National Library from June 21 to September 14, 2007, about his life and work.
