The Auburn University (also AU or Auburn is called) is a state university in Auburn in the US state of Alabama . With currently 24,847 students enrolled and 1,200 teaching staff, it is the second largest college in Alabama. The university is one of only 13 colleges in the United States to have land-grant , sea-grant, and space-grant research center status. The university has a particularly high reputation in the fields of architecture , engineering and economics . Of the universities in Alabama, it tends to do best in the rankings. Auburn University also has a campus in Montgomery, Auburn University Montgomery , which has about 6,000 students.
history
Auburn University was founded on February 1, 1856 as a private humanities college under the name East Alabama Male College . At that time the college belonged to the Methodist Church. The university was donated to the state in 1872 and renamed the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama . In 1899 it was renamed the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (API) again until it was finally given its current name in 1960. African American students have been admitted since 1964.
On June 9, 2012, a shootout occurred on campus in which several members of the Auburn Tigers Football Team were killed. The act took place at the clubhouse, 200 block of West Longleaf Drive.
