General Richard B. Myers

Richard Bowman Myers (born March 1, 1942 in Kansas City , Missouri ) is a former general in the US Air Force and was the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from October 1, 2001 to September 30, 2005, making him the highest-ranking officer in the US -Armed Forces .

Life

Richard B. Myers joined the Air Force in 1965. After his pilot training, he made 4100 flight hours on the F-4 , F-15 and F-16 fighters .

A variety of command and staff functions followed in the US Air Force.

Before General Myers himself became Chief of Staff, he served under his predecessor, US Army General Henry H. Shelton , as his deputy for 19 months. USMC General Peter Pace is succeeded as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff . General Myers and his wife have two daughters and one son.

On September 11, 2001 , General Myers routinely replaced Chief of Staff Henry H. Shelton, who was on a flight to London . Myers issued the DEFCON 3 state of defense readiness that day , which was last done in 1973 during the Yom Kippur War .

Since November 15, 2016, Myers has been President of Kansas State University .
