Order of the Eagle Cross
The Order of the Eagle Cross ( Estonian Kotkaristi teenetemärk ) is a state order of merit of the Republic of Estonia .
history
The Order of the Eagle Cross was launched in 1928 by the Kaitseliit , the Home Guard Association of the Estonian Armed Forces , on the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Estonia. With the entry into force of the Estonian Order Act on October 7, 1936, he became a State Order of Merit of the Republic of Estonia.
Award
The Eagle Cross Order is awarded to Estonians and foreigners by the Estonian President on the Estonian Independence Day in February each year. It recognizes services in the military field and for the defense of the Republic of Estonia.
The Order of Merit is awarded today in eight order levels: in five basic levels (I. as the highest level) and as a medal (gold, silver and bronze). All versions of the order bear the eagle , the Kaitseliit's heraldic animal , as the basic motif.

Between May 1995 and February 2006, the Eagle Cross was awarded a total of 785 times (592 orders, 193 medals).
