Martin E. Dempsey
Martin Edward Dempsey (born March 14, 1952 ) is a retired general in the US Army and was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from October 1, 2011 to September 25, 2015, and therefore the highest ranking general in the American armed forces due to his position. He was previously Chief of Staff of the Army from April 11, 2011 to September 7, 2011 . From 30 September 2011 to 30 September 2015 he was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States Armed Forces (Engl. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff , in short CJCS).
Military career
Martin E. Dempsey graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point and received his officer license as a second lieutenant in the US Army on June 5, 1974 . From January 1975 to September 1977 he was a platoon leader of a platoon of the 1st squadron of the 2nd US Cavalry Regiment, 7th US Army / US Army Europe in Germany and during this time, on June 5, 1976, became First Lieutenant promoted. He then served the same squadron until June 1978 as a personnel officer ( S-1 ).
After his return to the United States , Dempsey was promoted to captain on August 8, 1978 and completed advanced training for tank officers at the US Army Armor School in Fort Knox , Kentucky , by January 1979 . After this training he was transferred to Fort Carson , Colorado , to the 4th US Infantry Division and served there first as an engine officer and then until October 1980 as a platoon leader in the 1st Squadron of the 10th US Cavalry Regiment . He stayed in this squadron and took over the post of operations officer (S-3) until June 1981 and then finally until July 1982 in command of the squadron. From August 1982 to May 1984 Dempsey graduated from Duke University in Durham , North Carolina . From June 1984 to July 1987 he was an instructor and later an assistant professor of English at the US Military Academy at West Point. During that time he was promoted to major on September 1, 1985 . Then he took himself back to the school desk and completed by June 1988 the general staff training at Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth , Kansas .
Another assignment abroad followed in Germany in July 1988, this time as Executive Officer of the 4th Battalion , 67th US Armored Regiment, 3rd US Armored Division . From September 1989 to May 1991 Dempsey then served as an operations officer and later as an executive officer of the 3rd Brigade , 3rd US Armored Division and also took part in Operations Desert Shield / Storm during this time . On April 1, 1991, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and in July took over command of the battalion, which together with the higher regiment now belonged to the 1st Brigade of the 1st US Armored Division in Germany. After his return to the United States, he took over the post of head of the tank division in the officer personnel directorate of the personnel command of the US Army in Alexandria , Virginia in July 1993 . From August 1995 to June 1996 Dempsey studied at the National War College at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, DC and was promoted to Colonel on September 1, 1995 during that time .
Dempsey then took over command of the troops again and until July 1998 commanded the 3rd US Cavalry Regiment in Fort Carson, Colorado. From July 1998 to October 1999, Dempsey was a member of the Joint Staff at the United States Department of Defense, serving as Assistant Deputy Director for Politico-Military Cooperation for Europe and Africa (J-5). He was then placed under the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Henry H. Shelton as a special assistant, served in this role until August 2001 and was promoted to Brigadier General on August 1, during which time .
In September 2001 another assignment abroad followed, this time in Saudi Arabia as program manager of the modernization program of the Saudi National Guard . In June 2003 he took over the 1st US Armored Division from Ricardo S. Sánchez and also commanded it in the Iraq war . In this position he was promoted to Major General on September 1, 2004 . In August 2005 he took over the command of the Multi-National Security Transition Command Iraq from David H. Petraeus in Iraq , on September 8th he was appointed Lieutenant General . He remained in this position until May 2007 and was responsible for the further development and the training of the Iraqi security forces. He was then transferred to MacDill Air Force Base in Florida , where he serves as Deputy Commander of the US Central Command (CENTCOM), responsible and a. for the Middle East .
In February 2008 Dempsey was nominated as the successor to David D. McKiernan as Commander of the 7th US Army / US Army Europe and was confirmed by the US Senate on March 13th. After the resignation of his CENTCOM superior, Admiral William J. Fallon , Dempsey temporarily took over this post on March 28, 2008. In April 2008, General David H. Petraeus was nominated as Commander of CENTCOM. However, in July the nomination was changed and Dempsey was selected for the post of Commander in Chief of the US Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), which was confirmed by the US Senate on July 23. On October 31, 2008 Dempsey handed over command of CENTCOM to Petraeus at MacDill Air Force Base , Florida . On December 8, 2008, he took over command of the TRADOC from William S. Wallace and was also appointed general. He handed this command over to General Robert W. Cone on March 29th .
Dempsey himself took over from George W. Casey, Jr. on April 11, 2011 as the 37th Chief of Staff of the Army . On September 7, 2011, Raymond T. Odierno succeeded him.
