John William Foss (born February 13, 1933 in Hutchinson , Minnesota , † April 25, 2020 ) was an American officer and general in the US Army , the commanding general of the XVIII. Airborne Corps ( XVIII Airborne Corps ) and between 1989 and 1991 commander of the Army Command for training and operational training and development TRADOC ( US Army Training and Doctrine Command ) .

Life

John William Foss began his military career in April 1950 as he in the 136th Infantry Regiment of the National Guard of Minnesota came in and was taken to active duty infantry 1,951th He trained as an officer at the US Military Academy in West Point and was after its conclusion with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in 1956 as a lieutenant (Second Lieutenant) of the infantry in the US Army adopted. He completed postgraduate studies in public administration at Shippensburg State College with a Master of Public Administration (MPA) and was both an instructor at the US Military Academy and, as part of an exchange program, first US instructor at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst . For his work as an officer in the training and education command from 1973 to 1977 he was again honored with the Legion of Merit.

Foss was also G-3 staff officer of the III. US Corps ( III Corps ) and between 1980 and 1982 head of the United Military Advisory Group in the Philippines , for which he was awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal . As Brigadier General (Brigadier General) , he served as commanding general of the Training Command stationed in Germany Seventh US Army ( Seventh US Army ) as well as commander of the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division ( 1st Cavalry Division ) . He then served as Major General (Major General) between March 1984 and January 1986 Commander of the Army Infantry School (US Army Infantry School) as well as location Commander in Fort Benning and at the same time head of the infantry (US Army Chief of Infantry) . Franks junior succeeded him. For his services in this service he received the Army Distinguished Service Medal for the third time and the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal . He finally retired on September 1, 1991.

After his retirement, he was Chairman of the Commission of the Army Reserve Command ( US Army Reserve Command ) and advisor to various companies in the arms and defense industry. He was also a member of the advisory board of the ( Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs ) , a conservative think tank , and the National Infantry Foundation . He also taught as a senior mentor the tray warfare at the Armed Forces Staff College and is also Senior Scientist (Senior Fellow ) at the Institute of Land Warfare of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA). He was inducted into the US Army Ranger Hall of Fame in 1995 and received the Doughboy Award from the National Infantry Association in September 2009 . In May 2013 he was awarded the Distinguished Graduate at West Point .

His marriage to Gloria Foss, who died in 2014, resulted in two sons and a daughter.
