The Defense Superior Service Medal is a distinguished honor by the United States and is awarded by the United States Department of Defense for outstanding service with significant responsibility .

It was donated by the President of the United States Gerald Ford on February 6, 1976. The Defense Superior Service Medal is mostly awarded to experienced officers, e. B. to general staff officers or admiral staff officers who have provided services across the armed forces over a longer period of time. The medal is also awarded to astronauts who have made outstanding contributions to space shuttle missions, among other things .

For cost reasons, the design of the Defense Distinguished Service Medal was adopted, but in contrast to this it is not gold, but silver.

This award is listed in the Pyramid of Honor under the Silver Star , but is higher than the Legion of Merit .
