Maxwell R. Thurman
Maxwell Reid Thurman ( February 18, 1931 - December 1, 1995 ) was an American general . From 1983 to 1987 he was Vice Chief of Staff of the Army . He was also responsible for the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command . From September 1989 to November 1990 he was Commander of the United States Southern Command and therefore Commander of the US Armed Forces during the US invasion of Panama .
