James George Stavridis (born February 15, 1955 in West Palm Beach , Florida ) is a former admiral in the US Navy . From June 30, 2009 he served as the 15th Commanding General of the US European Command (EUCOM) and additionally from July 2, 2009 until his retirement on May 13, 2013 as the 16th Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) of NATO .

Life

family

Stavridi's paternal grandparents were of Asian Minor or Pontus-Greek descent, his mother came from a Pennsylvania German family. Stavridis himself was born in West Palm Beach, Florida and lived for a while as a child in Germany and Greece when his father, an officer in the US Marine Corps , was stationed in the US embassies there.

Stavridis is married to Laura Hall and has two daughters. He speaks Spanish and French as foreign languages.

Military career

Stavridis graduated from the US Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1976 . He was trained as an officer in surface warfare and served on aircraft carriers , cruisers and destroyers .

He received his PhD in Philosophy in 1984 and a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University . He also graduated from the National War College in 1992 .

From 1993 to 1995 Stavridis commanded the destroyer USS Barry (DDG-52) and was there off Haiti (Operation Support Democracy), in the Mediterranean off Bosnia and Herzegovina (supporting the no-fly zone in the Bosnian War ) and in the Persian Gulf (participating in 'Operation Vigilant Warrior '). In 1998 he served as executive assistant to Secretary of the Navy Richard J. Danzig and served as strategist and forward planner on the staffs of the Chiefs of Naval Operations and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff .

From 1998 to 2004 he commanded Destroyer Squadron 21. From 2002 to 2004 he was in command of the aircraft carrier combat group of the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) and supported combat operations in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom . From July 2004 to August 2006, served in Washington, DC as Senior Military Assistant of the US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld . He passed this position on to Lieutenant General Victor E. Renuart, Jr. in August 2006 .

On October 19, 2006, he took over command of the US Southern Command in Miami ( Florida ) from General Bantz J. Craddock and was thus among others. a. also responsible for the Joint Task Force Guantanamo , which operates the US internment camp at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base , Cuba .

On March 18, 2009, US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates (Obama Administration) proposed Stavridis for the post of Commander of the US European Command and, related thereto, for the post of NATO Supreme Commander Europe . This nomination was confirmed by the US Senate on June 11th . On June 25, 2009, Stavridis handed over command of SOUTHCOM to General Douglas M. Fraser in Miami .

Stavridis took over command of the US European Command in Stuttgart on June 30, 2009 and also the post of SACEUR on July 2, 2009. Stavridis was the first naval officer on this post and also took over command from Bantz J. Craddock.

On May 6, 2013, Stavridis was appointed 12th Dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University . From July he also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the US Naval Academy in Annapolis , Maryland . In 2016 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Candidacy for the office of vice-president

According to a report in The New York Times , Stavridis has been considered by the staff of Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton as a possible candidate for Vice President.
