Philip Mark Breedlove (born September 2, 1955 in Forest Park , Georgia in the United States ) is a former general in the United States Air Force (USAF). He served between May 2013 and May 2016 as commander of United States European Command (USEUCOM) and in personal union at the same time as the 17th Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) of NATO .

Previously, he was Commander of the United States Air Forces in Europe , the United States Air Forces Africa, the Air Component Command in Ramstein and Director of the Joint Air Power Competence Center.

biography

Youth and early military career

Breedlove grew up in Forest Park, Georgia and studied at the Georgia Institute of Technology , where he graduated in 1977. Breedlove is a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity . He then joined the Air Force and from March 1978 was a student pilot at Williams Air Force Base , Arizona . Between March and August 1979 he underwent flight instructor training at Randolph Air Force Base , Texas. Until January 1983 he worked as a flight instructor for the T-37 Tweet , flight examiner and runway supervisory unit controller. From January to September 1983 he was trained on the F-16 Fighting Falcon at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida and then transferred to Spain, where he stayed until January 1985. There he served as a flight instructor and commander of the 614th Tactical Fighter Squadron .

Breedlove was a liaison officer of the 602nd Air Support Operations Group at Kitzingen Air Base in Bavaria between January 1985 and March 1987 and was then transferred to the 526th Tactical Fighter Squadron in Ramstein, of which he was a member until January 1988. Eventually he became chief of flight safety of the 316th Air Division and held this position until August of the same year. In the following two years he was first an F-16 pilot, then deputy operations officer of the 512th Tactical Fighter Squadron , also in Ramstein. Between August 1990 and July 1991, he studied at Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base , Alabama . That year he earned a Masters of Science degree in aerospace engineering from Arizona State University . From July 1991 to May 1993 Breedlove was Chief of Air Operations in the United Nations Command and Republic of Korea / United States Combined Forces Command on the Yongsan Army Garrison in South Korea .

From May 1993 on, Breedlove was the commander of the 80th Fighter Squadron at Kunsan Air Base, South Korea . He held this position until July 1994. From there he went to the National War College at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, DC In June 1995 he became an operations officer of the United States Pacific Command Division on the General Staff in the Department of Defense . He stayed there until he was appointed commander of the 27th Operations Group at Cannon Air Force Base , New Mexico . From June 1999 to May 2000, Breedlove was a senior officer at Air Combat Command Headquarters at Langley Air Force Base , Virginia . The following year he commanded the 8th Fighter Wing at Kunsan Air Base. From June 2001 he held the position of Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force.

From June 2002 to June 2004, Breedlove commanded the 56th Fighter Wing at Luke Air Force Base , Arizona, and then the 31st Fighter Wing at Aviano Air Base , Italy . From June 2005 to October 2006, Breedlove was deputy commander of the 16th Air Force in Ramstein. He then served until July 2008 as Deputy Director of Strategic Planning and Tactics for the General Staff at the Pentagon. From July 2008 to August 2009, Breedlove, again stationed in Ramstein, commanded the 3rd Air Force . He then served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Plans and Requirements at Air Force Headquarters.

On January 14, 2011, Breedlove began serving as Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force ; he was promoted to general on the same day. In July 2012 Breedlove left this post to become Commander of the United States Air Forces in Europe .

After the cancellation of the originally planned John R. Allen , Breedlove was nominated on March 28, 2013 for the post of SACEUR , which he took up on May 13 of the same year. Breedlove has been retired since July 2016.

During his time as an active pilot, Breedlove completed over 3500 flight hours on the types F-16 , T-37 and C-21 .

criticism

Breedlove was made by various who? NATO partners accused of exaggerating Russia's military role in the Ukraine conflict . Der Spiegel reported that someone in the German Chancellery had spoken of “dangerous propaganda” in this context and that Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier had intervened with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg .
