General John P. McConnell

John Paul McConnell (born February 7, 1908 in Booneville , Arkansas , † November 21, 1986 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American general in the US Air Force and most recently Chief of Staff of the Air Force .

Life

After attending school, the son of a doctor studied at Henderson Brown College and graduated in 1927 with a Bachelor of Science (BS). He finished his training at the United States Military Academy in West Point in 1932 and then joined the US Army Air Forces, where he rose to general.

After he was from 1950 to 1953 commander of the Third Air Force and at the same time temporarily commander of the 7th Air Division, he became planning director of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) at Offutt Air Force Base in Sarpy County . In 1957 he became commander of the Second Air Force at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City and then in 1961 deputy commander of the SAC.

In 1962 he was appointed Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the US European Command , before he was Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force (VCSAF) from 1964 to 1965 . Most recently, General McConnell was Chief of Staff of the Air Force from February 1, 1965 to July 31, 1969, making it the highest-ranking officer in the US Air Force.

McConnell died of complications from cancer .
