Mark Anthony Welsh III. (Born January 26, 1953 in San Antonio , Texas ) is a general in the United States Air Force (USAF) and was the 20th Chief of Staff of the Air Force (CSAF) from August 10, 2012 to June 24, 2016 .

Education and career

Welsh first attended the Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington from 1972 and completed his studies in 1976 at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs with a Bachelor of Science . This was followed by training on various types of aircraft until 1984, and from 1984 Welsh himself worked as an instructor. Between 1984 and 1986, Welsh completed correspondence courses at Squadron Officer School , Air Command and Staff College, and Air War College , followed by a Masters Degree in Computer Resource Management from Webster University , Missouri , in 1987 . In the 1990s, Welsh served in changing uses, including in South Korea .

During his career, Welsh has had over 3,300 flight hours on the F-16 , A-10 , T-37 and TG-7A.

From June 1999 Welsh was commanding officer for training at the US Air Force Academy, where he was promoted to brigadier general on August 1, 2000 ; This was followed by a two-year stay in Germany, where he was stationed as director of the planning team of the US Air Forces Europe in Ramstein in Rhineland-Palatinate .

In 2003 he was reassigned to the United States to serve with the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force and was promoted to major general on August 1 .

Between June 2005 and June 2007 he was Deputy Head of the Joint Functional Component Command for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance of the US Strategic Command in Washington, DC , then Deputy Commander of the Air Education and Training Command , from December 9, 2008 with the rank of Lieutenant General .

From December 2010 onwards, Welsh commanded the US Air Forces Europe and the Allied Air Command - again in Ramstein - while being promoted to general , and at the same time acted as director of the Joint Air Power Competence Center of NATO .

On May 10, 2012, then US Secretary of Defense nominated Leon Panetta Welsh to succeed Norton A. Schwartz as Chief of Staff of the Air Force . The Senate confirmed the nomination on August 2, and Welsh was finally sworn in on August 10; he is the 23rd officer in this position since it was introduced in 1947. In summer 2016 he retired.

In office, Welsh was also a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff .
