Merrill Anthony McPeak (born January 9, 1936 in Santa Rosa , California ) is a former American general in the US Air Force , who was most recently Chief of Staff of the Air Force and briefly acting US Secretary of the Air Force .

Life

After attending the High School of Grants Pass , he studied economics at San Diego State College and graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Economics) from.

He then joined the Air Force in 1957 and completed postgraduate studies in international relations at George Washington University during his military service , which he completed in 1974 with a Master of Arts (MA International Relations). In the course of his military service he was promoted to general and in 1987 was commander of the Twelfth Air Force at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base , before he was Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) between 1988 and 1990 .

Most recently, General McPeak was Chief of Staff of the Air Force on October 30, 1990 and as such was the highest ranking officer in the US Air Force until his retirement on October 25, 1994. At the same time he was acting Secretary of the Air Force from July 14 to August 5, 1993 and thus Air Force Secretary of State under President Bill Clinton . On October 1, 1993, the 1st Special Operations Wing was renamed again , triggered by the directive of General McPeak, which provided that two active units may not have the same number. The USAF decided to rename it to the 16th Special Operations Wing, as the “competing” 1st Fighter Wing was given a higher weighting in the continuation of its name tradition.

After retiring from the military, he moved into the private sector and not only became President of McPeak & Associates, but was also a member of the Board of Directors of Tektronix from 1995 to 2006 . Since 2005 he has been a member of the Board of Directors of Health Sciences Group Inc. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of ECC International, Centerspan Communications, Inc. and Trans World Airlines (TWA).

McPeak, who was also involved in the Council on Foreign Relations , was originally a member of the Republican Party , but joined the Democratic Party at the beginning of the Iraq War . He was also one of the signatories of Global Zero , an initiative launched in December 2008 with the goal of complete nuclear disarmament worldwide. This is to be achieved through a gradual reduction in nuclear weapons and an accompanying arms control .
