Grants Pass is a city in Josephine County in the southern US state of Oregon . In 2003, 24,470 inhabitants lived here and in 2004 there were 27,195. The city is a starting point for boat tours through the gorge of the Rogue River .
The city is named after General Ulysses S. Grant , who held a key position in the American Civil War .
The city is crossed by the Rogue River and is surrounded by forested mountains. In addition to a small historic town center, Grants Pass offers shops typical of small towns as well as numerous restaurants and snacks.
In the southwest is Selma and a little to the east are the restored gold rush town of Jacksonville and Oregon's cultural mecca Ashland (famous Shakespeare Festival from mid-February to October). Also, the nearby Oregon Caves near Cave Junction are an easily accessible tourist attraction.
