Here he was appointed to the selection team of the Pacific-12 Conference. He was also named a league player. In 2002 he graduated from university with a degree in American Studies.

Career as a professional

In the Major League Soccer Superdraft 2003 he was selected by the San José Earthquakes in the fourth round. There he did not complete a single game and was loaned to the Portland Timbers in the USL First Division during the 2003 season. He played 16 times for the Timbers and conceded 15 goals. For the 2004 season he moved permanently to the team from Portland. He reached a new record with the Timbers with 363 minutes without conceding a goal.

Saunders moved to LA Galaxy in 2005 and was the third goalkeeper behind Kevin Hartman and Steve Cronin . He played a game for the reserve team of the Galaxy and was then loaned back to the Portland Timbers.

In early 2007, Saunders and three other players were fired from LA Galaxy. After a trial at Chicago Fire , he moved to Puerto Rico Islanders FC for the 2007 season . After a season he moved to Miami FC . From there he was loaned to LA Galaxy in September 2008, where he played three games in Major League Soccer.

In January 2009, Saunders moved back to the Galaxies . There he was committed as the second goalkeeper behind Donovan Ricketts . On November 22, 2009, he came on in the 66th minute in the MLS Cup , the final of the MLS play-offs, for Ricketts. In the final penalty shoot-out, he was able to fend off 2 of 7 penalties and thus secured the team the win of the MLS Cup 2009. From the 2011 season he was the goalkeeper of the Galaxies. In 2012 he was able to win the MLS Cup again with the team.

His contract was not renewed on February 22, 2013, because the Californians had signed a new player with Carlo Cudicini . After a successful trial session, he moved to Real Salt Lake to serve as substitute goalkeeper Nick Rimando . While Rimando played for the US national team at the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup , Saunders played two games for Salt Lake. However, he was injured and was out for the rest of the season.

On July 10, 2014 it was announced that Saunders will join New York City FC . The team will play in Major League Soccer from the 2015 season. He was loaned to the San Antonio Scorpions for the remainder of the season .
