The New York City Football Club , in short New York City FC or just NYCFC , is a franchise of professional football - League Major League Soccer (MLS) from New York City in the same state . It was founded in 2013 and has been participating in Major League Soccer (MLS) matches since 2015.

The initiators and owners are the City Football Group (as majority owners ) and the New York Yankees (as minority owners ). In addition to the New York Red Bulls , which are based in neighboring Harrison , New Jersey , it is the second team from the New York Metropolitan Area to participate in the MLS.

history

Don Garber, the commissioner of the MLS, had already announced in 2010 that a twentieth team would be included in the game operations and that they would be based in New York City. He was also very interested in attracting large European clubs as investors. One of the potential candidates was a start-up of the legendary New York Cosmos . So they spoke to the owner of the New York Mets , Fred Wilpon, and the owners of the New York Cosmos. After a scandal over the former head of NASDAQ , Bernard Madoff , Wilpon withdrew from the discussion about his own franchise in the MLS.

Garber had already contacted FC Barcelona in 2008 to promote the support of a team from Miami . However, this could not be achieved. When the then Vice President, Ferran Soriano, moved to Manchester City , Garber tried to persuade Manchester to take over - which was successful. For the time being, Soriano also took over the CEO position of the new franchise.

The NYCFC was awarded the contract on May 21, 2013. The franchisees paid a $ 100 million fee to the MLS. Previously, New York City Football Club, LLC was officially registered in the commercial register on May 7, 2013.

First season (2015)

The first scorer for the New Yorkers was Mikkel Diskerud . The game took place in the Citrus Bowl in Orlando and reached the second highest audience with 62,510 spectators at a premiere game of the MLS.

The NYCFC celebrated its first win at the first home game on March 15, 2015 against New England Revolution from Foxborough . The game ended 2-0. In the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2015 , the team was eliminated in the fourth round against New York Cosmos . The game ended 4-3 on penalties.

The NYCFC only reached 8th place in the Eastern Conference of the MLS in the 2015 season. So you could not qualify for the play-offs. As a result, coach Jason Kreis was sacked.

Second season (2016)

For the season 2016 the Frenchman took Patrick Vieira the team. He was joined by the Spaniard Javier Perez as assistant coach. He has already looked after various youth national teams in the USA. The team won their first game 4: 3 away against Chicago Fire . This trend did not continue in the first few games. In the US Open Cup they lost in the 4th round against New York Cosmos .
