The St. Louis City SC (full form St. Louis City Soccer Club or St. Louis City Soccer Capital ), short St. Louis City , is a future franchise of professional football - League Major League Soccer (MLS) from St. Louis in the state of Missouri . The team is expected to start playing in the 2023 season . The games are expected to be played in a football stadium with a capacity of 22,500 people.

history

In 2007, St. Louis was seen as a potential relocation candidate for Real Salt Lake from Sandy , Utah after the club's founder announced that they would sell the franchise if a new stadium is not built. The potential St. Louis owners group was led by Jeff Cooper, a local attorney. From 2008 to 2009, Cooper attempted to bring an MLS expansion team to St. Louis. Despite approved stadium plans for the construction of the $ 600 million Collinsville Soccer Complex, the MLS was not impressed with the financial backing of the offer and suggested that Cooper expand its investor group. Cooper founded a men's second division club and a women's professional soccer franchise instead . The AC St. Louis played only one season in Division 2 and the Saint Louis Athletica played to half of its second season in of 2010.

In late 2014, the St. Louis announced plans for a new stadium that will host both American football and soccer. The multi-purpose stadium would serve as the home of the St. Louis Rams and a future MLS team. On 12 January 2016, the subject Rams of the NFL to Los Angeles after they had twenty years played in St. Louis. The Rams relocation initially accelerated talks from an MLS expansion team .

On August 20, 2019, the MLS announced that St. Louis would join the league as the 28th franchise and is expected to start playing in the 2022 season. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , entry in July 2020 has been postponed to the 2023 season. In August 2020, the name St. Louis City SC , St. Louis City for short , the logo and the club colors red-blue-yellow-gray were published. The abbreviation SC stands for both Soccer Club and Soccer Capital ( soccer capital ), which underlines the importance of St. Louis for soccer in the USA . A few days later, the German Lutz Pfannenstiel , who had recently been sports director at the Bundesliga club Fortuna Düsseldorf , was hired as sports director.
