Systematics
Order : Cichliformes
Family : Cichlids (Cichlidae)
Subfamily : Pseudocrenilabrinae
Tribe : Lamprologini
Genre : Lepidiolamprologus
Type : Lepidiolamprologus cunningtoni
Scientific name
Lepidiolamprologus cunningtoni
( Boulenger , 1906)

Lepidiolamprologus cunningtoni is an endemic cichlid foundin Lake Tanganyika in East Africa.

description

Lepidiolamprologus cunningtoni reaches a length of 29 to 30 cm and has the slim and elongated body typical of predatory cichlids. The basic color is brownish or bluish-gray, the fins are gray. Young fish have eight wide cross bars. The scales of the fish are remarkably small.

Way of life

Lepidiolamprologus elongatus is distributed throughout the lake and lives solitary. It feeds piscivor (on fish) and usually swims close to the sandy bottom. Spawning takes place in large, self-dug, crater-like nests in the sandy soil as well as hidden in crevices and caves.

Systematics

The species was first scientifically described in 1906 by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger under the name Lamprologus cunningtoni and named after William Alfred Cunnington , a British zoologist and naturalist who took part in an expedition to Lake Tanganyika from 1904 to 1905 and mainly researched crustaceans . In 1991 it was transferred to the genus Lepidiolamprologus by Maréchal and Max Poll , which differs from Lamprologus mainly by its numerous, particularly small scales . Both morphological and molecular genetic data indicate, however, that the species is not closely related to the other Lepidiolamprologus species, but forms a clade with Neolamprologus modestus and Neolamprologus tetracanthus , the type species of the genus Neolamprologus . It is therefore listed in the Catalog of Fishes as Neolamprologus cunningtoni .
