Lepidiolamprologus ( Gr .: “Lepidos” = with scales, “lampros” = shiny) is a genus from the family of cichlids (Cichlidae), which is endemic in Lake Tanganyika and lives there on the scree coasts, in the rocky and transition zones.
features
Lepidiolamprologus males are 14 to 32.5 cm long, the females remain slightly smaller. The fish are very elongated, the cross-section of the body approximately round. The high number of scales in a longitudinal row (over 60) is characteristic of the genus. The mouth is large and deeply split, the teeth strong. There are some strong fangs in both jaws. The caudal fin is straight or is slightly indented.
Way of life
Lepidiolamprologus species live between rubble, on the rocky coasts and in the transition zone between rocky biotopes and the sand zone and feed on carnivore . They form territories , which they defend vigorously against conspecifics and similar-looking species, and only pairs or harem groups of one male and several females during the breeding season. The 200 to 500 small eggs are laid in caves or crevices in the rock. The larvae hatch after about three days.
species
Eleven species belong to the genus .
- Lepidiolamprologus attenuatus (Steindachner, 1909)
- Lepidiolamprologus boulengeri ( Steindachner , 1909)
- Lepidiolamprologus cunningtoni (Boulenger, 1906)
- Lepidiolamprologus elongatus (Boulenger, 1898) ( type species )
- Lepidiolamprologus hecqui (Boulenger, 1899)
- Lepidiolamprologus kamambae Kullander, Karlsson & Karlsson, 2012
- Lepidiolamprologus kendalli (Poll & Stewart, 1977)
- Lepidiolamprologus meeli (Poll, 1948)
- Lepidiolamprologus mimicus Schelly, Takahashi, Bills & Hori, 2007
- Lepidiolamprologus profundicola (Poll, 1949)
- Lepidiolamprologus variostigma Büscher, 1995
External system
The genus Lepidiolamprologus is monophyletic if Lepidiolamprologus cunningtoni is excluded . Together with the genus Altolamprologus and numerous species of the genera Altolamprologus and Neolamprologus , including many " snail cichlids ", Lepidiolamprologus forms a monophyletic clade within the tribe Lamprologini , which have an ossified lip cartilage as a common characteristic (ossified group). Lepidiolamprologus cunningtoni is more closely related to Neolamprologus tetracanthus , type species of the genus Neolamprologus .
