description

Lepidiolamprologus elongatus has an elongated, laterally slightly flattened body and becomes a maximum of 32.5 cm long. The terminal mouth is large. Seen from the side, the upper edge of the eye touches the head profile. The coloring is highly dependent on the mood. The basic color is dark brown, in the courtship season the fish are almost black. The head is light brown to copper in color, the lips are bluish at the corner of the mouth. The upper part of the iris is reddish. Two rows of dark spots and several rows of smaller, whitish or mother-of-pearl colored spots run from the gill cover to the tail stalk. The fins are brownish and patterned with whitish or pearlescent little spots. The edge of the dorsal fin is yellowish to reddish. The leading edge of the pelvic fins is whitish. There is a larger dark spot at the base of the caudal fin.

Way of life

Lepidiolamprologus elongatus lives as a loner on the rocky coasts of Lake Tanganyika and avoids the sandy zones. The species feeds mainly on smaller fish. It spawns on flat stones or in caves and forms a parent family in which both parents initially take part in breast care. The fry hatch after 3 to 4 days and are then 4 mm long. After swimming free, the males' brood care activity ceases.
