description

Lepidiolamprologus kendalli

Lepidiolamprologus kendalli reaches a length of 15 to 16 cm and has a slender and elongated body. The basic color is sepia brown to brown-black. It shows a pattern of three to five wavy or irregular zigzag lines, horizontal, yellowish or white-greenish stripes.

Way of life

Lepidiolamprologus kendalli lives at depths of 40 meters on the rocky coast of Lake Tanganyika. The fish are always close to the ground and live solitary. They move like pike like slow ambulance hunters and overwhelm their prey consisting of small fish in a sudden surprise attack. The fish spawn in caves and a clutch can consist of several hundred eggs.

Systematics

The species was scientifically described for the first time in 1977 by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll and his colleague DJ Stewart under the name Lamprologus kendalli and named after the American ecologist Robert L. Kendall, who caught the type specimens . In 1978 the German ichthyologist Wolfgang Staeck described a very similar species found on the Zambian coast under the name Lamprologus nkambae . Both species were transferred to the genus Lepidiolamprologus by Maréchal and Poll in 1991 , which differs from Lamprologus mainly by its numerous, particularly small scales . Lepidiolamprologus nkambae is no longer listed as an independent species at Fishbase but is used as a synonym description .
