Altolamprologus ( Lat . "Altus" = high so high, Lamprologus ) is a two -described existing types genus from the family of cichlid (Cichlidae). They are endemic in Lake Tanganyika where they live in the biotope of the rocky and scree banks. In German they arealso referred to as Nanderbuntbarsche because of their external similarity to the nander perches (Nandidae),which are not closely related.

features

The fish have, as an adaptation to catching prey in narrow crevices, a high-backed, laterally strongly flattened shape. The mouth is deeply split and runs diagonally downwards from the mouth tip. It is strongly protruding (protractile). The males are 12 to 13 centimeters long, the females remain much smaller at 7 centimeters.

Like most species from the Lamprologini tribe, the Altolamprologus breed hidden and lay their 100 to 200 eggs in small caves or crevices into which the females just fit.

species

  • Altolamprologus calvus (Poll, 1978) , has 7 to 8 dark transverse bands, fins with shiny spots, scales on the neck just in front of the dorsal fin.
  • Altolamprologus compressiceps (Boulenger, 1898) , has 6 to 7 dark transverse bands, black fins, neck scales from the back of the eye to the dorsal fin. From Altolamprologus compressiceps there is a color variant of the Zambian shores of Lake Tanganyika, with bright yellow head, which is the gold head compressiceps commercially.
  • A previously undescribed species, Altolamprologus sp. "Sumbu" (also: "sumbu shell") also comes from the south of Lake Tanganyika. These animals are only 5 to 7 inches long.
  • Research shows that Neolamprologus fasciatus , a species of cichlid from a related, non- monophyletic genus, belongs to the genus Altolamprologus . Neolamprologus fasciatus has a similar shape to Altolamprologus , but is less tall.

External system

Altolamprologus is one of the few definitely monophyletic genus in the tribe Lamprologini . The sister genus is Lepidiolamprologus , a genus with a cylindrical body shape. Together with Lepidolamprologus , the basal “ Schneckenbuntbarschen ” and some other Lamprologus and Neolamprologus species, Altolamprologus forms a monophyletic clade within the Lamprologini, which is characterized by ossified lip cartilage.
