Neolamprologus ( Gr .: "Neos" = new, so new Lamprologus ) is a species of fish from the family of cichlids . All species of the genus are endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. With over 40 species, the genus is by far the richest in species in the Lamprologini tribe. Investigations of the mitochondrial DNA have shown that the genus introduced in 1985 by the French ichthyologist Robert Allgayer and his colleague José Colombé is polyphyletic .

features

Neolamprologus species have an elongated, in some species also very elongated body, which is more or less strongly flattened laterally. The teeth are conical and arranged in rows. There are 6 to 12 fangs on the intermaxillary bone (premaxillary). The maximum sizes of the various species are between 4 and 20 centimeters, but most species remain smaller than 12 centimeters. Males often grow larger than females, but their genital papillae are significantly larger than those of males.

All Neolamprologus species are cave breeders . They live in pairs for reproduction or the males gather a harem around them.
