Neolamprologus brevis ( synonyms Lamprologus taeniurus , L. brevis , L. calliurus ) is afreshwater fish from the group of snail cichlids that is endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa.
features
As the scientific name suggests ( Latin brevis "short"), the fish looks a bit too short. Males reach a maximum length of 6 centimeters, females remain significantly smaller. There are no other external gender differences. The basic color is brown-beige, with the back slightly darker and the belly slightly lighter. On the sides of the body there are up to eight to nine narrow, silvery-whitish, light green or light blue horizontal stripes. Below the eye is a shiny area (the under eye line) that shimmers bluish to purple. The lips also have a bluish shimmer. The gill patch has a greenish shimmer. The fins are brownish and show whitish points and lines.
Way of life
Neolamprologus brevis lives in the sand littoral and in the transition zone from the sand littoral to the rocky zone in the entire lake at depths of 6 to well below 50 meters. It feeds on zooplankton , small crustaceans (especially copepods ) and insect larvae, and is a cave breeder that forms a father-mother family and uses snail shells of the genus Neothauma for reproduction (in aquaristics, shells of Roman snails are also used as a substitute ) . In contrast to other snail cichlids, the male and female of Neolamprologus brevis live in the same snail shell, where the eggs are laid and the brood care takes place. 30 to 50 eggs are laid per clutch.
threat
According to the IUCN, Neolamprologus brevis is not endangered.
