Occurrence and habitat

Neolamprologus tretocephalus is endemic and inhabits the rocky shores of Lake Tanganyika . The water temperature is 25–28 ° C. In addition, the water is slightly basic ( pH 7.5–8.0).

features

The length of the five-lane tanganyika cichlid is up to 15 cm. The male has dark fins, and the dorsal , ventral and anal fins are longer than the slightly smaller female.

Its species name tretocephalus is made up of the Greek tretos (“pierced”, “perforated”) and kephale (“head”), referring to large pores in the head area.

The five-lane Tanganyika cichlid is similar to the closely related species Neolamprologus sexfasciatus .

Sexual Behavior and Brood

The females lay 400–700 eggs in a cave, whereupon the young hatch after an incubation period of 48 hours . According to this, the young fish are not led by their parents.

Keeping as ornamental and farmed fish

Neolamprologus tretocephalus is kept as an ornamental fish in Europe . The species is aggressive towards other species, which is why it is not suitable for keeping in community tanks.
