Neolamprologus tetracanthus ( Syn .: Lamprologus tetracanthus ) is an African cichlid species that is endemic to the East African Lake Tanganyika . It is the type species of the genus Neolamprologus .

description

Neolamprologus tetracanthus has an elongated, laterally slightly flattened body and is a maximum of 20 cm long. The caudal fin is rounded. The fish are light brown to gray-brown and have six, barely visible, dark transverse bands on the sides of the body. Characteristic for the species are 4 to 6 horizontal rows of mother-of-pearl or shiny metallic scales. The fins are gray-brown with numerous bright spots. The dorsal and caudal fins are lined with yellow and black.

Way of life

Neolamprologus tetracanthus occurs close to the coast on all shores of Lake Tanganyika with free sandy soils. The species feeds mainly on snails, but also on fish and insect larvae. Snails that the fish cannot crack open with their jaws are sucked out of their shells. Spawning takes place in sand pits that the fish dig into the ground. The brood, which consists of several hundred fry, is led and guarded by both parents.
