Neolamprologus devosi is a small, African species of cichlid , which so far is only known from two places in the estuary delta and the lower reaches, a few kilometers above the mouth of the Malagarasi in Tanzania. The species was named in honor of Luc De Vos , a Belgian ichthyologist who researched the fish fauna of Central and East Africa, including that of Malagarasi.

description

Neolamprologus devosi has an elongated, laterally flattened body. The specimens examined for the initial description had standard lengths of 2.3 to 5.7 cm long. The body height is about 25% of the standard length, the head length is a third of the standard length. The fish are light beige-brown in color, the belly is light yellow. There are four or five vertical stripes on the sides of the body. There is a yellowish-colored zone below the eyes. The free edges of the scales are dark, so that the scales together form a net-like pattern. A dark band runs from the eyes to a dark, flaky spot on the gill cover. The lower lip and gill cover have a slightly bluish shimmer. The dorsal fin has a yellow border and then a black band proximally. The large, rounded caudal fin shows the same drawing in the upper section, its ventral section has a bluish shimmer. Neolamprologus devosi has 31 to 32 vertebrae.

Way of life

At the sites where it was found, the water was cloudy and at the time of the catch (December 1991) it had a temperature of 26 ° C, a pH value of 8.3 and a hardness of 12 ° dH . The stomachs contained detritus , freshwater shrimp, shellfish and the soft bodies of snails. So far nothing is known about the reproductive biology of the cichlid.
