Neolamprologus savoryi ( Syn .: Lamprologus savoryi ) is a cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika . The species was described in 1949 by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll and named after Savory, an administrative officer of the then Belgian Congo .

Neolamprologus savoryi becomes 8 to 9 cm long and has a moderately elongated, laterally flattened body. The basic color is silver-gray, bluish pink, dark blue or gray-brown, it becomes darker towards the back and lighter towards the belly. On the sides of the body there are six dark cross bars that are wider at the top and taper towards the abdomen. The edge of the gill cover is jet black, a line that runs obliquely backwards and downwards from the eye, blackish. The lips are blue-gray. Males and females look alike.
Way of life
Neolamprologus savoryi lives close to the shore in sediment-rich scree and uses caves and crevices as hiding places. An intestinal length of 70% of the standard length indicates an omnivore and gastric examinations showed that the fish eat small crustaceans ( copepods ), insect larvae ( Diptera ) and plant material. They are cave spawners ; the territorial males maintain a harem group with two or more females. These look after the small clutch and the fry, while the very aggressive males defend the territory. The fry are very small immediately after hatching and hide. The parent's instinct for brood care only disappears when the young fish have reached a size of 3 cm.
