Career
Neilson spent his junior years between 1958 and 1961 with the Prince Albert Mintos in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League . In his two full seasons, the defender scored 20 or more goals per season. He moved from the Mintos to the professional field at the age of 19 in the summer of 1961 and played for the Kitchener-Waterloo Beavers in the Eastern Professional Hockey League for one season . At the end of the season, his game earned him the appointment of rookie of the year and the appointment to the league's second all-star team.
For the 1962/63 season Neilson was committed by the New York Rangers from the National Hockey League and played there in defense on the side of Doug Harvey . The Canadian played for the following twelve years in the Rangers squad and was invited twice to the NHL All-Star Game during this time and was elected to the NHL Second All-Star Team at the end of the 1967/68 season . The defender had his most successful season - measured by his offensive yield - in the game year 1968/69 when he scored 44 points . In the summer of 1974 Nilson was selected in the Intra-League Draft by the California Golden Seals , which he led to their resettlement after the 1975/76 season together with Bob Stewart as team captain on the ice. However, Neilson only played 26 games in the Oakland franchise's final season after suffering a knee injury. For the 1976/77 season , the defender moved with the team to Cleveland , Ohio , where the team played as the Cleveland Barons until its dissolution in the summer of 1978 . Neilson remained team captain with Stewart.
Through the merger of the Barons with the Minnesota North Stars , the now 37-year-old defender was placed on the reservist list and from there hired as a free agent by the Edmonton Oilers of the World Hockey Association . Until the announcement of the end of his career in the summer of 1979, he completed 35 missions there due to persistent back problems. In 2010, Neilson was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame .
