Joseph John "Joey" Johnston (born March 3, 1949 in Peterborough , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who in the course of his active career between 1965 and 1976, among other things, 331 games for the Minnesota North Stars , California Golden Seals and Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League (NHL) on the position of left winger . As a member of the California Golden Seals, whose team captain he was between 1974 and 1975, Johnston took part in the NHL All-Star Game three times in a row between 1973 and 1975 . His younger brother Jim was also a professional ice hockey player and was active in the International Hockey League (IHL).
Career
Johnston spent his junior years between 1965 and 1967 with the Peterborough Petes from his native Peterborough , who were based in the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA). The striker had two solid seasons with the Petes. After he had collected 23 scorer points in 44 games in his rookie season , he increased the value in his second year in the league to 27. Due to a 15-game suspension, he reached the number of points in only 32 inserts. After his first OHA season he was selected in the NHL Amateur Draft 1966 in the second round in eighth place by the New York Rangers from the National Hockey League (NHL).
The Rangers equipped the attacker with a professional contract in the summer of 1967, whereby a transfer within the OHA to the Kitchener Rangers was void. In the organization of the New York Rangers, the talent was used at the beginning of the 1967/68 season with their farm team , the Omaha Knights , in the Central Professional Hockey League (CPHL). Although Johnston knew how to convince there with 46 points in 70 games, the New York Rangers parted ways with him in a transfer deal in June 1968. Together with Wayne Hillman and Danny Seguin , the Canadian was given to the Minnesota North Stars in exchange for Dave Balon . Even there he did not manage to establish himself in the NHL. The winger made eleven appearances for the North Stars in the NHL during the 1968/69 season . The rest of the season and the entire following he spent with Minnesota's cooperation partners in the Minor League, now renamed Central Hockey League (CHL), with the Memphis South Stars and Iowa Stars . Then they used him for a year in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Cleveland Barons , where he made it with his performances in the AHL First All-Star Team . He also scored 74 times in 72 games.
Another club change in May 1971, in which he moved with Walt McKechnie to the California Golden Seals and Dennis Hextall was sent to Minnesota in exchange , brought Johnston finally the desired regular place in the NHL. In the service of the Californians, the 22-year-old completed his first full NHL season, in which he scored 32 times. In the following two years, the attacker continuously increased his points count to 67 points, which earned him the first of three consecutive nominations for the NHL All-Star Game in 1973 . He also acted as team captain from February 1974 . He filled this post until another transfer in June 1975. His new employer was the Chicago Black Hawks , who had received him in exchange for Jim Pappin and a third-round vote in the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft .
Before Johnston could go on the ice for the Black Hawks, however, he had to cure a wrist and head injury. He suffered this in August 1975 in a car accident in which his van collided head-on with another vehicle near Toronto and Johnston was thrown ten meters out of his vehicle. As a result, he only returned to the Black Hawks roster in November 1975, but could not return to his previous performance. In 32 missions he managed only five assists, after which he was sent to the Dallas Black Hawks farm team in February 1976 . After the season, the striker ended his active career at the age of 27 due to the aftermath of the injuries he had suffered from the previous year.
