The Canadian city of Peterborough is located in the province of Ontario , 125 km northeast of Toronto on the Otonabee River . One of the main attractions of the city is the Peterborough boat lift , which opened in 1904.
history
In 1818 Adam Scott settled west of the Otonabee River . A year later the then village with the name Scottdale was founded. Since then, the city has grown rapidly, especially due to the large number of immigrants. The city experienced one of the largest waves of immigration in 1825, when more than 2,000 Irish immigrants from Cork arrived. In 1893 the Peterborough canoe company was founded. On July 1, 1905, Peterborough was declared a city with a population of 14,300 people.

74,898 people live in the city on an area of 58.61 km², which corresponds to a population density of 1218.91 inhabitants per km². The Peterborough agglomeration is home to 116,570 people, making the city the 33rd largest city in Canada.
politics
Since 1984 Sylvia Sutherland , a politician with the Ontario Liberal Party , has served as mayor of the city for five terms. The city is the seat of the county of the same name , but no longer belongs to it.
economy
The main industry in Peterborough is manufacturing. The most important resident companies are Siemens , General Motors , General Electric and Quaker Oats . A subsidiary of Lufthansa operates one of the world's seven call centers here, with Peterborough primarily intended to cover the Canadian and US markets.

Peterborough is connected to Highway 115 and Trans-Canada Highway 7. The Peterborough Airport is located 5.56 km south of the city. Peterborough also has a local public transport system, the Peterborough Transit, and is connected to the Canadian Pacific Railway . The city is also on the Trent-Severn waterway , which also houses the Peterborough boat lift mentioned above .
Culture and sights
The Canadian Canoe Museum (" Canadian Canoe Museum ") in Peterborough is the only museum in North America that specializes in canoes.
