Brian Cherney

Brian Cherney (born September 4, 1942 in Peterborough / Ontario ) is a Canadian composer.

Cherney studied from 1960 to 1963 at the Royal Conservatory of Music piano with Margaret Miller Brown and Jacques Abram and composition with Samuel Dolin , then at the University of Toronto composition with John Weinzweig . Between 1966 and 1969 he attended courses from György Ligeti , Karlheinz Stockhausen and Mauricio Kagel at the Darmstadt Summer Courses .

From 1971 to 1972 Cherney taught music theory and composition at the University of Victoria , then at the Music Faculty of McGill University . In 1975 he published a monograph on the composer Harry Somers .

Cherney has composed more than ninety works since 1960, including orchestral music, concerts, chamber music and pieces for solo instruments. With a string trio commissioned by the CBC , he received first prize at the International Rostrum of Composers in Paris in 1979. In 1984 he received the Jules Léger Prize for new chamber music for the work River of Fire for oboe d'amore and harp .

Cherney's brother is the oboist Lawrence Cherney .
