Sylvia Sutherland

Sylvia Sutherland (* 1940 or 1941 ) is a former Canadian politician ( Ontario Liberal Party ) and journalist .

life and career

Sutherland graduated from the Ryerson Institute of Technology with a degree in journalism . At Trent University , she received a 1968 Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in History and the University of Reading later a Postgraduate Certificate in Education . She worked as a journalist for the Toronto Telegram . She was also later active as a television presenter for political magazines , cooking programs and literary television programs with book presentations, among other things . In 1985 she ended her television career. She also wrote a weekly column for the Peterborough Examiner newspaper in the 1980s .

She was Alderman in Norwood . She stood in the 1980 election as a candidate for the Ontario Liberal Party against the MP of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario , Bill Domm , and was defeated by 2,215 votes. Sutherland was also the Liberal candidate for the provincial parliament in the 1995 election. She was defeated by Progressive Conservative candidate Gary Stewart .

She served as Mayor of Peterborough , Ontario for five terms from 1986 to 1991 and from 1998 to 2006 . This makes her the mayor with the longest term in office in the city's history. In 2004 she planned to take part in nude photos for a calendar to benefit victims of the Peterborough flood disaster in 2004.

In March 2007, she was appointed to the Ontario Municipal Board for a five-year term . In June 2012, in this capacity, she chaired a hearing on the decision in favor of operating a hostel for backpackers on the outskirts of the city center. This was her third case in Peterborough. Previously, Sutherland chaired the meeting on two cases, including an appeal regarding the zoning of a property on Rogers Street in East City. Prior to these cases, she was not used on cases involving her community, although she said there was no regulation on this.

Sutherland is married. In 1967 she moved in with her husband Dr. David Sutherland from Toronto to Peterborough. Her husband was the first president of Sir Sandford Fleming College . In August 2010, she was sentenced to a fine and a cash donation to a charity. Sutherland had previously ignored a traffic sign and caused the death of a woman driver.

In April 2006 she received the Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumni Award from Trent University. In June 2012 she was awarded the Queen's Jubliee Medal .
