Career

Huffman spent his junior days between 1985 and 1987 with the Guelph Platers in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). In his first year there, the defender managed to win the double consisting of the J. Ross Robertson Cup of the OHL and the Memorial Cup of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). At the end of the Memorial Cup he was awarded the George Parsons Trophy for the fairest player in sport. In the summer that followed, the talented defender was selected in the first round of the 1986 NHL Entry Draft in 20th place by Philadelphia Flyers from the National Hockey League (NHL) and made it into the squad at the beginning of the 1986/87 season Flyers. However, after nine missions he was sent back to the Platers in the OHL, where he ended the season with the award for the best defender in the league in the form of the Max Kaminsky Trophy and the election to the First All-Star Team. He then got with Philadelphia's farm team Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League (AHL) further assignments with the professionals.

In the 1987/88 season , the 19-year-old made the final leap into the Flyers' squad. There he made 52 appearances in his rookie season . Although Huffman knew how to convince with his talent on the offensive, his deficits on the defensive predominated, which the then Flyers head coach Mike Keenan repeatedly pushed forward to remove Huffman from the squad. Until the 1990/91 season, the former first-round election was found again and again in the Hershey Bears squad and he lacked any constancy and self-confidence at the NHL level. In the meantime, Huffman even asked for a break and returned to his hometown in order to be clear about his future. Ultimately, the Flyers management ran out of patience in June 1992, although after his return he had completed his best NHL season to date with 32 scorer points in 60 games. Huffman became part of one of the largest transfer deals in NHL history. Together with Steve Duchesne , Peter Forsberg , Mike Ricci , Ron Hextall , the first round suffrage of the Flyers in the NHL Entry Draft 1993 , 15 million US dollars and later Chris Simon and Philadelphia's first round pick in the NHL Entry Draft in 1994 , he was given to the Nordiques de Québec , who in return sent Eric Lindros to the Flyers.

The Canadian only spent one and a half seasons with the Nordiques. After being on the waiver list in January 1994 , he was selected from there by the Ottawa Senators . The defensive player was also only active for a good two years for the Canadian capital city franchise . Another transfer brought him back to the Philadelphia Flyers in March 1996, for whom he played his last four NHL games. Finally, Huffman let his career fade out in the following three years in the International Hockey League (IHL), where he first went on the ice for one season for the Las Vegas Thunder and then spent two years playing at the Grand Rapids Griffins .

After his career end closed Huffman studies in law at the Kaplan University with the Bachelor from. He also served as a National Hockey League Players' Association NHLPA certified player agent. For the 2016/17 season , Huffman returned to the organization of the Flyers and was assistant coach in the Lehigh Valley Phantoms farm team in the AHL. Between December 2018 and April 2019 he was head coach for a while, but returned to the assistant position in the 2019/20 season.

International

At the international level, Huffman represented his home country Canada with the U20 national team at the Junior World Cup in 1987 in Czechoslovakia and with the senior team at the 1992 World Cup , also held in Czechoslovakia. The defender did not win a medal in either tournament. At the Junior World Championships, the Canadian and Soviet teams were disqualified before the end of the tournament because of a mass brawl, at the World Championships the Canadians failed in the quarter-finals and finished eighth, far from the medals.
