- Intermediate round
For the 1985/86 season, a new playoff format was introduced, in which the six winners from the first round move into an intermediate round. There the three teams in each conference play in one group, each team playing twice against their two competitors; once away, once at home. The bottom of the group was then eliminated, the other two teams contested the semi-finals in the usual best-of-seven mode. This intermediate round was abolished in the following season by returning to the bye system.

* The Spitfires and Centennials needed an additional playoff for second place. |
