Petri Matikainen (born January 7, 1967 in Savonlinna ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player and current coach who has been under contract as head coach of the EC KAC in the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League since May 2018 .

Career

As a player

Petri Matikainen began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of SaPKo Savonlinna , for whose professional team he made his debut in the I-divisioona , the second Finnish division, in the 1984/85 season . The defender then spent two years with the Oshawa Generals in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League . With Oshawa he won the 1987 J. Ross Robertson Cup , the OHL championship. He then returned to his Finnish homeland, where he received a contract with the top team Tappara Tampere from the SM-liiga . With Tappara he immediately won the Finnish championship title in the 1987/88 season . In the same year he took third place in the European Cup with his team at European level . From 1989 to 1994 he played for Jokipojat in the first and second Finnish division. Then in two years he was on the ice for KalPa Kuopio in the SM-liiga. For the 1996/97 season , the left shooter was signed by the Berlin Capitals from the German Ice Hockey League . There he began the following season before he joined the EC KAC from the Austrian Ice Hockey League in the middle of the season . With the team he was runner-up at the end of the season and took second place with the team in the Alpine League . In the 1998/99 season he was again runner-up with the EC KAC before ending his active career at the age of 32.

International

For Finland , Matikainen took part in the U20 World Junior Championships in 1986 and 1987 . At the U20 World Cup in 1987 he was world champion with his team.

As a trainer

In the 2003/04 season, Matikainen started his career as an ice hockey coach. As head coach he looked after the U20 juniors of the Pelicans Lahti , whose professional team he looked after in the 2004/05 season in the SM-liiga. From 2005 to 2007 he was assistant coach of Espoo Blues from the SM-liiga. He then worked for the team as head coach for four years and led them to the runner-up in the 2007/08 and 2010/11 seasons as an outsider. For this he received the Kalevi-Numminen-Trophy as coach of the year of the SM-liiga in both seasons .

In parallel to his coaching career in clubs, Matikainen was assistant coach of the Finnish U20 national team at world championships in 2004, 2005 and 2007 . At the 2011 World Cup , he was world champion as assistant coach with the senior national team of Finland.

For the 2011/12 season the Finn was hired by the reigning champions HIFK Helsinki as head coach. From 2012 he acted as head coach at HK Awangard Omsk before he was dismissed after six games in the 2013/14 season. At the end of October 2013, Matikainen became head coach of the EC Graz 99ers and thus the successor to Mario Richer .

From September 2014 he was head coach at HC Slovan Bratislava . He then worked for three years as the head coach of the Pelicans .

In May 2018 he was signed by the Austrian record champions EC KAC , for whom he was already a player.
