Martin Schumnig (born July 28, 1989 in Klagenfurt ) is an Austrian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Klagenfurt AC in the Austrian ice hockey league since 2006 .

Career

Schumnig began his career in the various youth teams of the Klagenfurt AC and made his debut in the 2006/07 season in the combat team. In the following years he was used again and again for a few games in the Erste Bank Liga and also showed better and better performances in the junior league. In the 2008/09 season he moved up to the permanent defenders and was able to celebrate two championship titles this season with the combat and U20 teams .

In June 2013, after he had won the national title for the second time with his team, he dissolved his contract with the EC KAC amicably to move to North America. There he completed the training camps of the Cincinnati Cyclones and the San Antonio Rampage , but received no contract. Therefore, he returned to the KAC in October 2013. In 2011, 2012 and 2013 he was voted Carinthian ice hockey superstar of the year .

International

In the junior division, Schumnig played for Austria at the U18 World Championship 2007 and the U20 World Championship 2008 in Division I.

In the men's national team , Schumnig made his debut on November 5, 2009 in the 2: 4 defeat against Belarus in Babrujsk . He took part in the Division I World Championships in 2012 , 2014 and 2017 when he was the tournament's best assists, as well as the top division in 2013 and 2015 . In addition, he represented his colors in 2013 in the successful Olympic qualification for the 2014 Games in Sochi , but was not taken into account for the Winter Games itself, and in the unsuccessful qualification for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang .
