The Austrian Ice Hockey League 2006/07 began on September 21, 2006 and ended on April 5, 2007 with the title win by EC Red Bulls Salzburg , who were able to prevail in the final against the defending champions EC VSV .

General

Since the champions of the national league , EHC Lustenau, refused promotion to the Bundesliga for financial reasons, and no other domestic team was willing to do so, the same seven Austrian participants played as in the previous season. The reigning Slovenian champions, HK Jesenice , were accepted into the Bundesliga as the eighth club . Jesenice “only” played for the victory of the Erste Bank Liga, but not for the Austrian championship title . If Jesenice had won the final, the title of Austrian champion would have been awarded to the defeated finalist.

mode

The Erste Bank ice hockey league ("Bundesliga") began on September 21, 2006. Four rounds were played back and forth, with the points achieved up to then halved after 28 rounds (point sharing ). The best four teams qualified for the play-offs. The semifinals were held in the best of five mode , the final as a best of seven series.

The regulation for transfer card players was resolved so that a total of six legionnaires' seats were available per club. Two more transfer cards were allowed to be shared among the clubs, whereby these ultimately went to the Graz 99ers as the worst-placed team in the previous season.

HK Jesenice

In April 2006, the Austrian Ice Hockey Association received a written request from HK Jesenice (Slovenian champions from 2005 and 2006) to join the Austrian Bundesliga. Due to the unpleasant number of participating clubs, the association and most of the club presidents were largely positive about the application. In May the association and HK Jesenice reached an agreement on the general conditions for participation, and in June the General Assembly of the Austrian Association approved participation. Jesenice had previously provided the required bank guarantees and the Slovenian association agreed to the change. As a final step, the presidential conference on July 7th approved. In the meantime, the inclusion of HDD Olimpija Ljubljana had been discussed, but since that would have led to a league with nine clubs, no further negotiations had taken place.

Change of coach

  • The EC KAC looked after six defeats in seven games after just seven laps forced to dismiss coach Primeau. First, Emanuel Viveiros was appointed interim coach, later he was confirmed until the end of the season.
  • The Graz 99ers parted ways with Mike Bullard after 12 laps . Peter Znenahlik was an interim coach from October 26th to November 2nd, after which Mike Shea took over the position. He was followed on November 13th by Jim Brithén , who was released on January 22nd, 2007. By the end of the season, Mike Shea then acted again as coach.
  • At the Black Wings Linz coach Bill Stewart switched to the Hamburg Freezers on November 25th despite an ongoing contract . The subsequent legal steps taken by the Linzers were unsuccessful. Stewart's successor was Chris Valentine .
  • The HC Innsbruck separated after 38 games due to failure by Alan Haworth and hired the employed at that time in the Netherlands compatriot Larry Sacha jerk .

Basic round

In the regular round, the EC Red Bull Salzburg showed a clear dominance and was able to quickly break away from the other participants. It was only in the 44th round, the Vienna Capitals, that the first team succeeded in defeating Salzburg on their own ice, when the result was 5: 4 very close. However, this was the only home defeat for Salzburg in 27 games. They also topped the away table with 13 wins.

In the end, the first pursuer, the EC VSV, ended up in second place, eight points behind. The midfield was made up of Linz, Vienna and HK Jesenice. Jesenice needed some time at the beginning to reach the level of the EBEL, but afterwards showed quite good performances and was also able to assert himself in the middle of the table. The away game in Vienna on February 23, 2007 was a memorable game when Tomaž Razingar equalized a 3-1 deficit within 23 seconds with two goals out of two players and Jesenice won the game 4-3. The playoff participation decided for the Slovenes only in the last round, where the team was defeated by the immediate competitor, the Capitals, in the penalty shootout, and thus just missed a sensation.

Innsbruck, the EC KAC and the Graz 99ers could not intervene in the fight for the title. While Innsbruck became weaker and weaker as the season progressed and the shape was only partially restored, even with the new coach, both the Klagenfurt and the Graz team struggled with major problems. The EC KAC was able to end the season with five wins in a row, but in the end was 13 points behind a playoff place. Above all, the bad team composition and the lack of fitness of the players after the inadequate summer training were criticized.

The Graz 99ers had clear deficits in the line-up right from the start. Even Steve Passmore in goal could not hide this, so that he was soon replaced first against Pavel Nešťák and later against Walter Bartholomäus . The Grazers also played along with the injuries. Multiple coach changes and sometimes public criticism from our own executive committee did the rest. In the end, the team was beaten last with only eleven wins in 56 games.

Playoffs

In the playoffs it quickly became apparent that the course was going to repeat last year's final. Both Salzburg and Villach confidently defeated their respective opponents 3-0 and secured their place in the finals early. An exciting series seemed to unfold there at first when it was evenly 1: 1 after two games. However, Salzburg was then able to clearly win the next three games and thus secured the title of Austrian champions ahead of time.

Semi-final series EC Red Bull Salzburg - Vienna Capitals

Salzburg started their series against the Capitals with a 9-3 win. The match winner turned out to be Frank Banham , who scored five goals himself and also had a pole shot and a missed penalty shot. Six of Salzburg's nine goals were also scored in power play. In the second game, the Capitals showed better performance, but ultimately remained clearly inferior. It was only in the third game that they presented themselves as an equal opponent and kept up with the high pace of Salzburg until about halfway through the game. In the meantime, they moved away to 6: 3, but the Capitals came closer to 6: 5 towards the end of the game. The equalizer was no longer successful despite the goalkeeper drawn and numerical superiority.

Semi-final series EC VSV - EHC Linz

Like the Salzburgers, the EC VSV was able to clearly win its first semi-final game, although there were uncertainties on both sides. However, Linz could not convince, especially in the defensive area, and immediately gave up two chances to take an early lead at the start of the game. The second game was much tighter, with Linz taking over the game in the middle section and turning a 2-0 deficit into a lead. Mickey Elick equalized with a remarkable hit. In overtime, however, the Linzers could not use a power play to win. In the shootout that followed, Villach shooters met Dany Bousquet and Marc Brown , while Rob Shearer and James Desmarais failed for the Linz team. The third encounter was similarly close, with the Linzers having many unused chances to score. Just before the end of the game, Patrick Machreich left his goal when the score was 3: 2 in favor of Villach, whereupon Bousquet hit the empty goal for the final score of 4: 2. This marks the tenth time that the EC VSV has reached the final in the past eleven seasons.

Individual results final

The final series represented the new edition of last year's final, which the EC VSV won with 4: 2 wins. As expected, the first game of the final series was close. While the EC VSV relied on its defense, the Salzburg team relied on their ice skating advantages. In the end, the game was decided by the special teams, with Reinhard Divis succeeding his first season shutout.

The second game could only be decided in the penalty shootout, whereby the EC VSV presented itself much stronger than in the opening game. With changing tours, the regular playing time ended 3: 3. In the shootout, Dany Bousquet and Marc Brown met for EC VSV, while Marco Pewal and Frank Banham awarded for Salzburg. The game, however, had far-reaching consequences, as Salzburg brought charges against Daniel Gauthier and Devin Edgerton from the EC VSV to the criminal panel of the ÖEHV , which resulted in a suspension of four games for the former and a fine against the VSV.

The mood before the third game was accordingly heated. On the ice, Salzburg was able to clearly score 6: 3, with the EC VSV still leading after the first section. Salzburg scored four goals in the second period and turned the game around, but it also had far-reaching consequences. Just a few hours before game four, the penalty senate announced a suspension against Matthias Trattnig from EC Red Bull Salzburg. The Salzburgers also poured fuel on the fire with a press release in which they criticized, among other things, the conditions in the Villach town hall, as well as various misconduct in the interpretation of the rules by the criminal panel. They were able to win the game, which took place a little later, 3-0, and contrary to fears, there were no problems with the game.

Salzburg also dominated the fifth game sovereignly and won a 4-2 win on their own ice. In addition to the revenge for last year's defeat in the final, the Salzburg team also won the Austrian championship title for the first time.
